Rupert Murdoch In Contract to Buy a 6,500-Square-Foot Central Park South Apartment

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch could realistically live in any New York City dwelling of his choosing, and it looks like he found the cream of the crop. The News Corp founder is in contract to buy a 6,500-square-foot full-floor apartment with picturesque Central Park views, according to The Wall Street Journal, which happens to be one of the many, many publications owned by Murdoch’s company. Although the contract price has not been revealed, the 27th-floor seven-bedroom and seven-bathroom co-op unit was listed at $30 million.

The dwelling’s crown jewel is a 720-square-foot great room with 18-foot tall ceilings and three huge arched glass doors that lead to a 46-foot-long terrace perfectly centered over Central Park South. On one side of the great room, a formal dining room with parquet floors adjoins the black and white tiled entrance hall, which comes equipped with a wet bar. At the other end of the apartment, the primary suite utilizes what was originally a spacious library, boasting massive windows, a fireplace with period detailing, and a huge dressing room with a separate walk-in closet. The ensuite bathroom features a windowed bathtub and intricately tiled floors depicting fish and other sea life, bordered by swirling waves.

The full-floor spread was amassed by opera singer and philanthropist Alice Tully, the namesake of the concert hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Tully moved into the building in 1959 and spent nearly a decade adding on neighboring units until she owned the entire 27th floor, which she used to display a large art and travel souvenir collection and host “famous soirees,” according to the listing. The late hedge fund manager Julian H. Robertson, Jr. bought the sprawling unit almost 30 years ago and lived there until his death last August.

Murdoch is still angling to sell the One Madison penthouse that he listed last March.
