This award-winning addition to a grand sandstone villa in South Australia received international attention for its clever blend of design and functionality. In 2022, the project by Architects Ink won the Residential – Houses (Alterations & Additions) category and the John Schenk Award at the South Australian Architecture Awards.
This home is truly an ode to the adventurous spirit of the homeowners. Seeking a marriage between luxurious lifestyle and optimal performance, Architect Marco Spinelli endeavoured to recognise the main goal for the new addition: an emphasis on connection. The addition was built with the primary intention of accommodating for extended family, as well as forging a stronger connection with the natural environment and the expansive north-facing rear yard.
Located deep within the site, this addition provides all of the living areas and bedrooms a northern aspect to the garden, pool and tennis court. The picture of absolute luxury, there was one main challenge in the design: the home is located beneath a major flight path. This made acoustic control absolutely critical, as well as establishing a strong visual connection with the outdoor spaces from the interior. Spinelli made use of Insitu concrete walls and roofing to help seal the home against background aeroplane noise before approaching the challenge of the windows.
High-performance acoustic windows were absolutely crucial to protect the acoustic peace of the interior. The windows needed to seal out all background aviation noise as well as optimise cross ventilation and security – a tall order indeed. Thankfully, Schüco window systems provided a golden opportunity. Working with window specialists KR Installations, the final design utilised multiple fixed windows, a pair of sliding doors, and tilt and turn windows which were strategically located to achieve cross ventilation. These included:

Schüco was the ideal choice for this situation due to its extremely slim profile and capacity for extensive glazing. This helped to protect peace inside the home whilst maintaining a strong visual link to the world outside. Simultaneously, the tilt and turn systems give homeowners the power to remotely control their Schüco windows and doors – a masterpiece of flexibility and functionality.
