Tom Petty’s Beloved Malibu Bungalow Lists for $9.9 Million

“There’s somethin’ lucky about this place,” according to Tom Petty. The late rock legend’s Malibu beach house, which inspired his song “Something Good Coming,” just hit the market for $9.85 million. The property includes the charming 2,200-square-foot main house, a separate guest house that Petty used as a recording studio, a spacious and secluded brick patio with a rose garden, and 66 feet of Escondido Beach frontage.

The California bungalow-style structure, which has three bedrooms and an equal number of baths, was built in 1950 and still retains a cozy midcentury cabin vibe throughout its wood-paneled interior, which the musician apparently appreciated. “Tommy loved that the beach house was pretty much all original,” his wife, Dana Petty said. “I remember him writing so many songs there.”

A floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace separates the kitchen from the main floor open-plan living area, both of which enjoy tall exposed-beam vaulted ceilings, wood plank floors, and retro wood paneling. The other side of the living room accesses a sweeping ocean view deck via a wall of sliding glass doors. A wide row of windows provides rose garden views to the kitchen, which has long stretches of counter space and vintage wood cabinets that match the floors. A nearby formal dining room complete with a deer antler chandelier is outfitted with library shelving and alfresco deck access.
