With large-scale projects, it’s common practice for several firms to divide the work according to their expertise: one firm takes on the architecture, another the landscaping or the urban design, and so on. Unlike most firms, GGLO does all these things at once. Established in 1986 with offices in Seattle, Los Angeles and Boise, GGLO has undertaken this multi-pronged approach over dozens of large-scale projects across the Western United States.

There are many benefits to GGLO’s design approach. Rather than subdividing each new project into separate landscaping, architectural and urban entities, the firm sees each one of these components as part of one comprehensive whole. This symbiotic relationship guarantees all design components work seamlessly and organically together. To achieve this, the firm relies on a foundation of discovery and rigor to incorporate art, technology, low embedded carbon materials and social equity into elegant built solutions. Their designs combine subtle nuances of place with innovative expressions of form and art to enrich the cultural context of a place.

GGLO’s redevelopment plans for Shoreline Place, in the Seattle suburb of Shoreline exemplifies all these qualities. Where an outdated big box store surrounded by a sea of asphalt currently stands, GGLO has designed a connected, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-used community which will be home to 1300 new multifamily housing units, 17 acres of community gathering space and dozens of small stores and restaurants in what will eventually become the city’s new ‘downtown’.

Thanks to its extensive experience in landscaping and urban design, GGLO has conceived a series of walkable, interconnected open spaces that will serve to create lush communal gathering spaces, both big and small. This includes a new Festival Street, designed to be the cultural heart of the neighborhood and home to a new farmer’s market. A new network of pedestrian and vehicle pathways will make the once isolated site easily accessible, ensuring the Shoreline Place serves as an economic and cultural catalyst for the rest of the city.

When completed, Shoreline Place by GGLO will become the new cultural heart of Shoreline, WA; photos and images by GGLO

Interested in working for one of the most dynamic architectural firms combining the best of architecture, landscaping, urban planning, art and much more? Consider applying to GGLO through Architizer’s jobs board.

GGLO is currently looking to hire a Senior Project Architect specializing in high-rise development for their Seattle offices; an Architect Project Manager and a Project Architect focusing on Multi-family Housing for their Boise offices; and a Project Architect focusing on Market Rate and Affordable Housing for their offices in Los Angeles.
